Dell aims for greener data centers

The SAP user association (USF), ahead of its annual convention, has written a forum focused on responsible digital. A topic on which a paper that Dell has just issued is based. In this document, the group warns about the importance of a global strategy to build a greener data center.

Dell Vice President Travis Vigil reacts to VAST’s public statements about the data center and its server. The latter had been considered more environmentally friendly than PowerProtect and PowerScale. The executive explained that in their company respect for the environment is a priority. It is the responsibility of every supplier, he said.

As a note, this company sometimes offers career opportunities open to professionals with freelance status . A device which confers many advantages to those who adopt it. By being self-employed, one benefits in particular from a freedom in the fixing of its schedules, from a geographical freedom…

The company considers it essential to establish a green data center

With this in mind, Dell has developed Open Manage Enterprise (OME). Software to perform a power review of the server from :

    • Workloads ;
    • On consumption.

At the same time, users can check the temperature data. With this tool, the thermal and electrical consumption of each server can be monitored . In addition, OME helps to create clear reports that will be used to achieve sustainable development goals. This tool provides information on :

    • Inoperative servers ;
    • The volume of greenhouse gases that PowerEdge servers emit.

It is also possible to set limits on the use of the rack on this tool. This will allow later on to learn the thermostat and power supply readings. Users also use OME to :

    • Compare server performance ratings ;
    • Know the quality of use of the virtual machine.

Digital Responsibility is a hot topic

Dell emphasized the importance of establishing a green data center while the issue of responsible digital is a recurring theme. Moreover, the USF convention (association of French-speaking SAP users) 2022 was focused on this theme. On the home page of the website dedicated to it, a few non-contextualized indicators had been exposed:

    • Digital waste weighs the equivalent of 5,000 Eiffel Towers ;
    • The publication of a photo on the Internet represents three light bulbs lit for one hour ;
    • Etc.

Prior to this convention, USF published an article signed by the 9 members of the executive committee. In this article, the association makes commitments in terms of :

    • Accessibility: thinking about the design of digital limb instruments for each user ;
    • Diversity: opening up members’ information system departments to new profiles.

However, it deals with the subject of the environment in more depth, citing three main parts. The first one deals with the practices that their users should adopt to reduce digital pollution . The second is to to privilege computer equipment without programmed obsolescence, repairable, and which lasts longer. The last one is to Requesting USF vendors to develop infrastructure and software. :

    • Or using more renewable energy ;
    • Or less power hungry.
